O'Neil joined the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when she was in high school. The judges loved her voice and she advanced to the Top 100 Round. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by judges. Despite this, O'Neil suffered a significant loss in top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the top 3, and the bottom 2. The judges were shocked by this and informed the crowd that Melissa was the top contestant. O'Neil's performance was so consistently good, that he did not fall into the third place. O'Neil and Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performances in September of 2005. Werner reportedly said that the headlines would state that O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and become the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the history of the show. O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
